Celebrating Uniqueness

“Naa jaane kyun…..hota hai yeh zindagi ke saath, achaanak yeh mann….kisi ke jaane ke baad…..kare phir uski yaad…..chhoti chhoti si baat.”

The words of this song couldn’t be truer for you. A maverick in the truest sense of the word, you, for me, weren’t a film-maker. You were a story-teller. Each time you switched on your camera, out came a beautifully crafted tale. A tale that was worthy of all the praise and adulation that it received from your devoted audience and admirers.

Your movies were refreshingly new. It wasn’t the same old tried and tested formula of running around trees, singing songs of undying love a la Yash Chopra or the hippie college romance like the Karan Johar movies. Each and every movie, whether adapted from a book or not, was an original masterpiece. Each scene was like a painting. And how flawless they were! You managed to make every moment of your movies magical and memorable. You managed to extract the best performances from your cast. So it wasn’t surprising that in your 20 year old film-making career, you deservedly won 12 National Awards. And many of your movies have also graced innumerable international film fests.

The one thing I have always admired about you is your honesty. Whether it was movies or your life. You’ve never hidden behind closed doors fearing people’s jibes and taunts. You have lived your life the way you wanted. You even chose your own name! How admirable is that!

I’d like to make a special mention of “Chitrangada.” I am not at all exaggerating when I say that this has been the best movie amongst all English/Hindi/Bengali movies I’ve ever watched. I have lost count of the number of times that I have watched this movie yet it never fails to captivate me. Every time I watch it, it leaves me mesmerised. No other movie has left me so spellbound as “Chitrangada” does each and every time I watch it.

Today, you are no more amongst us mortals. But, for me, you are still alive through your movies. Many Quentin Tarantinos and Christopher Nolans may come and go but there will never be another you. Nobody can take your place. You are irreplaceable. Nobody can call himself or herself the next Rituparno Ghosh.
